People with learning disabilities, autism and other communication support needs are at increased risk of coming into conflict with the Law and once in custody are hugely disadvantaged in the justice system. Support staff have an important role in helping to reduce the impact of these disadvantages.

  • Do you know how many people in prison have learning disabilities or autism?
  • Did you know that bail conditions are not in easy read?
  • Do you know what you can do to support someone if they are going to court?

Learning outcomes

  • Better understanding of challenges people face in the justice system and the importance of fair and equal access to justice
  • Introduction to underlying causes of offending and justice system processes
  • Increased awareness of the role for support staff in supporting people with the justice system, and preventing offending

Workshop description 

The workshop is divided into 2 x 3 hour sessions both of which must be attended.

The workshops are small (8-10 people), and currently being delivered online, via Zoom. The workshop is highly interactive with small group activities, discussions, quizzes and video.

The work of SOLD is informed by the members of our user group, each of whom has learning disabilities and/or autism, and lived experience of the justice system.  The workshop includes pre-recorded video content of members speaking about their lived experience.

The cost is £125 per person.

Who should attend?  

The workshop is designed for all frontline care staff supporting people with learning disabilities, autism and others with communication support needs in any setting.

The workshop is not designed for criminal justice specialists or those working in forensic services.
